Apprentice Success Story

Three M Tool & Machine in Commerce Township and employee Alex van den Bremer were recently recognized for the Oakland County employer’s commitment to workforce development and its Registered Apprenticeship Program.

“Oakland County’s workforce development team builds strong ties with companies like Three M Tool & Machine, collaborating to provide valuable training to new and existing employees,” said Oakland County Executive David Coulter. “Three M Tool & Machine’s development of youthful talent is helping to strengthen Oakland County’s skilled workforce.”

Alex van den Bremer studied robotics, engineering and mechatronics in high school and spent a year in the manufacturing program at the Oakland Schools Technical Campus in Wixom. He toured Three M Tool & Machine with his classmates as part of Oakland County Manufacturing Day during his senior year. After graduation, Alex accepted a full-time bench hand position with the company and is acquiring the skills and knowledge that are key to a successful career in advanced manufacturing.

Three M President and CEO Sam Medwid said the collaborative relationship with Oakland CountyMichigan Works! has enabled the company to bring in young talent, including van den Bremer, which has significantly contributed to the growth and innovation of the company.

“We believe, through our mutual efforts, that we’re making a significant contribution to the development of our local workforce,” he said. “We are deeply grateful for the services provided by Oakland County Michigan Works! and we’re eager to continue this fruitful partnership for many years to come.”

The company hired four apprentices, including van den Bremer, after they completed the on-the-job training program using federal Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) youth program funding. In addition to program referrals, Oakland County Michigan Works! provided a range of supportive services to the students. The company also received $84,262 in Going PRO Talent Fund awards over the past three years, benefiting 59 new and existing employees, including apprentices.

His hard work has paid off and set him on a path to a successful career in manufacturing. We’re so proud of him.”

Founded in 1971, Three M Tool & Machine is a family-owned, contract precision machine shop that provides manufacturers with one-stop sourcing for small, medium, and large part machining along with other related processes. This includes industry-leading inspection and verification services.
